Workshops at the National Coal Mining Museum for home educated young people aged 12-16.

These sessions run across the year at The Hub, Reception, for home educated young people aged 12-16, with two slots each day from 10.30am-12.30pm and 2pm-4pm. The October session (Wed 30 September, Thu 1 and Fri 2 October 2026) is an Art and History workshop exploring WW2 evacuation and the Bevin Boys, with object handling and willow poppy making as part of a commemorative installation; part of this workshop takes place in another area on-site in the same building. Later dates cover different themes: December (Wed 9 to Fri 11) is an Art and Wellbeing session making personalised gifts using stained-glass resin, engraving and willow-weaving; February (Wed 10 to Fri 12) is a hands-on Science workshop on wiring, soldering and light refraction, with dimmed lighting at points; March (Wed 17 to Fri 19) is a Science Week geology session using Bunsen burners to study rock formation, which may involve strong smells; May (Thu 13) is a full-day Rotary Challenge engineering event for teams of 3-4, booked separately; and July (Wed 7 to Fri 9) is an Art and Careers drawing and illustration workshop with graphic design artist Paul Eades. Each session costs £10 per person. The museum cannot offer refunds for non-attendance and cannot change a booking to a different date.
