A free talk on nurses' First World War experiences, led by Professor Jerry Palmer, for adults.

Historian Jerry Palmer explores the personal testimonies of volunteer nurses who served on different sides and fronts during the First World War, drawing on a set of previously overlooked memoirs. He looks at how the nurses' own accounts of the war compared with public discourse at the time about women's roles, and draws out common themes across nurses from different combatant nations despite big differences in the standard of medical care they worked with. This is an adults talk at the National Army Museum in Chelsea, running for an hour. It's free to attend but booking is required. Palmer is a former Professor of Communications at London Metropolitan University and author of a 2021 book on nurse memoirs from Britain, France and Germany during the Great War.
