Lives in Focus: Photography in Sheffield's Collection

New photography exhibition at Graves Gallery exploring identity, community and belonging through the city's collection.

Lives in Focus draws on Sheffield's city collection to explore photography's power to connect generations, places and shared histories. At its centre are newly acquired works by Jyll Bradley, Joanne Coates, Rotimi Fani-Kayode, Sunil Gupta and Rene Matić, drawing on the artists' own experiences to bring fresh perspectives on identity, community and belonging. These sit alongside selected pieces from the wider collection by photographers including Fay Godwin, Isaac Julien and Sam Taylor-Johnson, covering both portraiture and place. The exhibition looks at visibility, marginalisation and desire, showing how photographers have used the medium to challenge dominant narratives and bring overlooked voices to the fore. It runs at Graves Gallery, above Central Library on Surrey Street, with entry free and a £5 donation suggested. The gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday, 11am to 4pm, and closed Sundays, Mondays and bank holidays.
