WHERE

Bristol

What it’s like

A working harbour cafe where kids can watch restored 1907 pumping engines and boats on the slipway while you eat.

This one's not a soft play or a farm, it's a cafe bolted onto a real bit of Bristol's dock machinery, and that's the appeal. The old pumping engines that used to power the port are still there, restored, and kids can have a go at the Human Accumulator to see how the hydraulic power actually worked. It's hands-on in a way that a plaque and a rope barrier never is.

There's a waterside terrace too, so if the engines don't hold their attention for long, watching boats come in and out on the slipway usually will. It's a slower sort of visit, more wander and point than run about, which suits a curious six-year-old better than a toddler who wants to charge around.

Food-wise it's a proper cafe rather than an afterthought, doing breakfasts, lunches and snacks alongside the hot drinks and pastries, so you could easily make a morning of it without needing to bring your own picnic. Just don't expect a car park. There's no visitor parking on site, only limited disabled bays, and the pay and display nearby is restricted, so factor in a walk or a bus if you're driving in.

One thing worth knowing: the yard gates can shut at short notice if there's dangerous operations going on. It doesn't sound like it happens often, but if you've come specifically for the engines it's worth having a plan B in your back pocket for that day.
