What it’s like

Free towpath walks along the Lagan, with a heritage cottage and an old lighter barge to poke around if the volunteers have opened up.

The towpath is the main event here: flat, easy walking along the Lagan with plenty to spot on the water if you keep the kids' eyes peeled for wildlife. It's free to wander, no ticket, no session times to work around, which makes it an easy one to slot into a weekend when you don't fancy planning much.

The bit worth building your visit around is Lock Keeper's Cottage and the Industry lighter, a restored barge moored nearby. Both are opened up by volunteer heritage guides, usually 10am to 4pm on weekdays and a shorter slot on the last weekend of the month, but the site is upfront that opening depends on who's available that day. Worth ringing the park office before you set off if seeing inside is the whole point of the trip, rather than turning up and hoping.

Beyond the towpath and the heritage buildings, the park runs proper events too, walks, talks, that sort of thing, but every one of them needs booking and paying for in advance online. There's no wandering into an event on spec here. If fishing's more your thing, the Lagan's had its water quality cleaned up and restocked in recent years, and there's no closed season for coarse fishing if you fancy bringing a rod along with the kids.

There's parking and toilets on site, and it's all outdoors, so a wet day means wellies rather than a wasted trip. Dogs are welcome on a lead for the general park, though they're not allowed on the minibus events or anywhere they'd bother livestock.

Plan your visit

Is it free to visit?

Walking the park and towpath is free. It's only the organised events that come with a cost and need booking.

Do we need to book?

Not for a general walk. Events run by the park do need advance booking and payment online, and numbers are often limited.

When can we see Lock Keeper's Cottage?

Volunteers open it up on weekdays, usually 10am to 4pm, and on a shorter slot on the last weekend of the month. It depends on who's available, so it's worth phoning the office first.

Can toddlers manage the walk?

The towpath is flat and easy going, which suits buggies and smaller legs, though the site doesn't set out a specific age range.

Are dogs allowed?

Yes, on a lead and under control. They're not permitted on minibus events or anywhere livestock might be affected.

Can we fish while we're there?

The Lagan's been restocked and there's no closed season for coarse fishing. Game fishing runs 1 March to 31 October.
