What it’s like
Free to visit, an underground stone passage you can duck into and explore beneath an old rath.
This is a proper hidden bit of history: a T-shaped souterrain, basically a stone passage built underground, with drystone walls and a lintelled roof still holding up after all this time. Kids get a kick out of the fact that they're walking through something people built centuries ago to hide from raiders or just keep food cool. It's not a big attraction with a visitor centre and gift shop, it's a genuine site you turn up to and explore.
There's no entry fee, which makes it an easy add-on to a day out rather than the main event. It won't take long, this is the sort of stop that fills half an hour rather than an afternoon, so pair it with something else nearby if you're making a day of it.
One thing worth knowing: access to the souterrain is sometimes restricted if works are going on, so it's not guaranteed to be open every time you turn up. If you've got a child who loves squeezing through tight stone passages and imagining what it was like to live there, this will land well. If they need constant entertainment or a café halfway round, it might feel a bit thin.
Plan your visit
How much does it cost?
Nothing, it's free to visit.
Do we need to book?
No booking is needed, you just turn up.
Is it always open?
Not always. Access is sometimes restricted when works are happening, so it can be worth having a backup plan.
What is there to actually do?
You explore the souterrain itself, a T-shaped underground passage with drystone walls and a lintelled roof.
