What it’s like

Pick a ceramic shape off the shelf, paint it, and leave it for firing. Two-hour sessions for 7s and up, 90 minutes for the little ones.

You pick a piece off the shelf on the day, sit down and paint it. That's the whole idea, and it works for a wide age spread: a four-year-old will happily cover a small animal in purple, a ten-year-old will take an hour over a plate. The main studio seats up to 30 painters, and there's a separate party room for up to 26.

Sessions are timed by age. Ages seven and up get two hours, six and under get 90 minutes, which is about right, because a small child's attention tends to run out somewhere after an hour. The studio charge is £2 per person on the day, and then you pay for whichever ceramic item you choose from what's in stock, so the total depends on the shape your child picks. Worth knowing there's no session on Mondays. Otherwise it's 10 till 6 Tuesday to Saturday, 11 till 6 on Sundays.

The catch is the firing. Pieces go in the kiln after you've painted them and the schedule varies week to week, and the site is blunt that you shouldn't leave anything needed for a specific date until the last minute, because a re-fire can make a gift late. If it's a present for a birthday, paint it early. Paint at home kits are an option if you'd rather do it on your own table.

Parties are the other big thing here, and the rules are tight. The fixed-price party is for 10 or more painters up to age 16, and you need to book at least 14 days ahead with a £20 non-refundable deposit. You bring your own cake and food, but it has to be in individual party boxes per child, which is a faff if you've pictured a buffet table. One supervising adult per 10 children has to stay.

Plan your visit

How much does it cost?

£2 per person for the studio, then you pay for whichever ceramic piece you choose on the day from what's in stock. The piece is the bigger part of the bill.

Do we need to book?

Party packs need booking at least 14 days ahead. For ordinary painting sessions, you can ring ahead or use their booking link if you want to be sure of a table.

How long do we get?

Two hours if your child is 7 or over, 90 minutes if they're 6 or under. That's the session length they run to.

When are you open?

Tuesday to Saturday 10 till 6, Sunday 11 till 6. Closed Mondays, so don't turn up at the start of the week.

Can we bring our own food?

For parties, yes, but it has to be in individual party boxes for each child. You can bring a birthday cake too.

What's the minimum for a kids party?

10 or more painters for the fixed-price party. Fewer than 10 and you pay the normal cost instead.

How much deposit do parties need?

£20, non-refundable, paid when you book. That's on top of the party cost.

Do adults have to stay at a party?

One supervising adult per 10 children has to stay with the group. So for a class of 20, two grown-ups.

When do we get the finished piece?

The firing schedule varies week to week after you've painted. If it's a gift for a set date, paint it well before, because a re-fire can push it late.
