Free lunchtime lecture on how Axholme's watery place-names reveal its history from fenland to farmland.
Dr Kathryn Bullen gives a lunchtime talk on what Axholme's place-names reveal about the area's past, from marshes, carrs and holmes that hint at old flooding patterns to the changes brought by Cornelius Vermuyden's 17th-century drainage scheme. She looks at how place-names, studied alongside maps, archaeology and environmental data, can help identify land that was once wet or dry, and how that knowledge still has practical value today for thinking about flood risk and land management. The in-person lecture at North Lincolnshire Museum has sold out, but online tickets are available for anyone who wants to watch remotely. It's free to attend, though booking is required.
